Venmo is arguably one of the most convenient payment services out there – regardless of if you’re using an iPhone or an Android phone.

You can send and receive money in seconds with just a few taps. Venmo also supplies an option which enables you to request money.

It’s one of the most user-friendly there are, and learning to use it is a lot less overwhelming than you think.

In this post, I will highlight everything you need to know to use Venmo correctly.

How to Pay with Venmo Online

Almost all merchants – including Uber and Amazon – integrate Venmo as a payment option in their mobile app.

However, to use this option, you will need to install the Venmo app on your phone in addition to the merchant’s app. It is the only way to pay for in-app purchases using Venmo.

Now, depending on where you’re making a payment, here are the different ways you would make a payment with Venmo:

Sending Money Using the Venmo App

  1. Launch the Venmo app on your phone by clicking on its icon on your home screen/menu.
  2. After the app opens, you will see a symbol that looks like the pen and pad with a “$” sign on it. This is called the payment button, and this is the icon you must tap if you want to send or receive money (more on that later).
  3. After you tap on the payment button, a textbox will appear. Enter the username of who you want to send money to. Alternatively, you can find the person in your friend’s list that appears when you scroll down.
  4. If you enter a username that you’ve never transacted with before, a confirmation pop-up asking you to confirm if you’ve picked the right one will appear.
  5. Next, enter the amount you want to transfer to the designated field. You can also optionally write a brief memo or description of what you’re paying for.
  6. Since the app works in conjunction with its social network, you can choose whether the transaction is visible to your friends or not. This feature becomes accessible by tapping on the icon at the bottom of the page – you much pick between “Private,” “Public,” and “Friends.”
  7. Post setting your preferences, tap on the “Pay” button.
  8. You will then need to select how you want to pay – you can choose between a credit card, a debit card, and or a bank account that’s linked to your Venmo.

After you hit the final “Pay” button, you will receive both a confirmation email and a notification of the transaction on the app’s main menu.

Paying for A Purchase on A Mobile Browser with Venmo

If you see a Venmo button:

  • Tap on the button on your mobile browser. A checkout page will appear on the next screen, where you must select the Venmo payment option for the second time.
  • In some cases, you may need to connect your account with the merchant—however, most times, you’ll checkout without needing to do it.

If you see a PayPal button:

  • You can pay using Venmo by clicking on the PayPal button at a merchant site’s checkout page. The Venmo payment option will appear on the next screen (if it’s made available by the merchant).
  • Remember that paying this way will still require you to have the Venmo payment app installed.

Paying for a Purchase in Another App with Venmo

  1. If an app has a Venmo button in its payment section, you can tap on it to pay using Venmo.
  2. You will see a prompt that requests permission to link your Venmo account with the merchant. You must grant permission.
  3. You can then pay for the purchase by navigating through the prompts that follow.
  4. If you need to disconnect your account from the merchant, tap “Disconnect” after tapping on the merchant’s name via the “Connected Merchants” menu in the Settings.

How to Transfer Money from Venmo To A Bank Account?

  1. Launch the Venmo app on your phone by clicking on its icon on your home screen/menu.
  2. Find the hamburger menu on the top-left corner of the screen, and tap on it.
  3. Select the “Transfer to Bank” option. The option may be named “Transfer Money” on some mobile devices. You may need to click on a “Manage Balance” button to see the option on some devices.
  4. Type in the amount you want to transfer in the field that will appear on the next screen.
  5. Then, select how you want to transfer it. You can opt to transfer for free, but there’s also the option of transferring instantly after paying a fee.
  6. To confirm the transfer, select the “Transfer” option.

How to Receive Money Using Venmo?

Making sure that you’ve linked a card or a bank account to your Venmo account will make the process a lot easier.

The app doesn’t require you to press a specific button to confirm the transaction.

However, you will need to take some steps to transfer the funds to your bank account from your Venmo account.

If you haven’t linked your bank account to your Venmo, here’s how you do it:

  1. Launch the Venmo app on your phone by clicking on its icon on your home screen/menu.
  2. Find the hamburger menu on the top-left corner of the screen, and tap on it.
  3. Tap on the “Payment Methods” button.
  4. Select the “Add a bank or card” option, and then select “Bank.”
  5. Add the bank account’s details in the designated field on the next screen that appears.

While connecting and verifying your bank account with the app isn’t required, I highly recommend that you do it. It will make sending and receiving money a lot easier.
